    69 Vette Carburetor

I am trying to get educated on how I go about getting an OEM carburetor for my 69 vette. I am told I need to know the date code and casting numbers that go with my Vette. How do I do that and how can I get an OEM carb ?? Obviously I wasn't smart enough to keep the original and want to go back to orginal configuration.

Also, I'd like to go back to OEM for the wheels, trim rings and caps. Any suggestions on the best options for doing that vice paying Mid-America approximately 1000 dollars for OEM parts ???

Appreciate any advise anyone can offer. R/Don B

    Don----

It would be a lot easier to answer your question if you provided more information about your car, especially what engine option you have. But, we'll do the best we can.

Assuming that your car uses a Rochester Quadrajet(since you used the term "carburetor" and I'm assuming you don't have an L-88 or ZL-1), there were 5 assembly line carburetors used. 300hp/MT=7029203; 300hp/THM=7029202; 350hp=7029207; 390hp/MT=7029215; 390hp/THM=7029204. Your date code will depend on your car's build date.

If by "OEM" you mean an original, dated, assembly line carburetor, you will need to find an appropriate core and have it rebuilt OR purchase an appropriate rebuilt unit from a restoration carburetor source. Jerry Luck Motorsports and Bob Kunz could probably supply you with the carburetor that you need and they both have good reputations.

If by "OEM you mean a carburetor that has the exact original configuration but not the original "numbers" and your car is equipped with a small-block, a brand new Rochester QuadraJet Carburetor is still avilable from GM , or, at least, is still available in delaer stocks. This carburetor, GM #7046904, is configured virtually identical to your original except for "numbers". It will make your car run perfectly and, in my opinion, better than ANY rebuilt carburetor. It is EXPENSIVE, though; GM list is $959.13!

As far as the wheels and trim goes, you can do better than $1000 for the set. The wheels are available from Hayes Wheel dealers. I haven't got their catalog number handy, but these wheels are VERY popular and you can usually buy them for $75 each or less. These wheels are identical to the current GM service replacement wheel, GM#327708, except that they are not stamped "GM" in small letters. Original hub caps are available under GM #3925801 and you should be able to buy these for $60 each or less from a competitive GM dealer. Original GM trim rings are also still available under GM # 3923626. These, also, should cost about $60 each or less.

Let me add to the good advice Joe has given you. IF (long pause here) you decide to go to an original restored carb, as opposed to a new one, I can endorse the work done by Jerry Luck. I wanted an original for my 66 small block and Jerry was recommended to me. I bought a completely restored, original carb from him and I have been very happy with its performance, reliability, and looks. His number is 314-895-1551. I have met the man and I am convinced he does some of the best work out there. Gary

Try The Last Detail at 1-770-414-0077 for great prices on the trim rings and centers.

Mid America is often one of the more expensive catalogs, often by 25%.

If you are trying to get a Carb from Jerry Luck, be sure you can stand to wait. My 71 454 Quadrajet has been on order with him for 7 weeks and I can not even get an acknowledgement of when it will ship. I have heard he is the best rebuilder around, but my experience is showing a long wait. Good Luck.
