    C1 Side Windows

The side windows in my '62 need work. From the full up position, the rear portion of the window drops dramatically when lowering. When raising, it's necessary to "help" the window because it binds. Usual 56-62 stuff. This condition is not because of the tracks. I cleaned, lubed, and adjusted them a few years ago. Didn't help. Haven't had the opportunity to get back to it until now.

So, I'm going to go in there and restore it. Usual scenario - take it apart; curse; clean everything; paint some things; lose parts; break parts; buy parts; read the ST-12; and, ask for advice here.

I'm expecting to need to rebuild the regulator. Is that the usual cause of the "droop" when lowering the window? I realize the binding on raising could be for a variety of reasons.

Chris, you may well find that the nylon rollers that ride in the tracks are broken/worn. These need to be in good condition and also the rivets holding them need to be straight and tight. If there is a spot where the window needs help, then it is probably a regulator issue, but the tracks and rollers could be the culprit as well.

It is normal for the back of the window to drop slightly when being lowered, and for the front top to pull away from the window post.

      Chris --
Another area to be careful of is the liner material (fuzzy stuff) in the rear window run. If its not smooth and fully seated against the run, the window will bind going up and down.

Another note on the fuzzy stuff..... As posted here on numerous ocassions, the material currently sold by the restoration stores is too thick. I have had good success using scrap convertible top material with the cloth side turned toward the window frame. Also, when installing, I use a square punch handle that is just small enough to fit inside the channel to smooth the material. I have done this on 3 or 4 C1's in the past couple of years with good success.
