    C3 1968 AXLE CODE

I'm trying to decode the axle numbers on the tank sticker for my 1968 coupe 327/350shp. It states: 02G81NA. Someone told me that this axle ratio was a 3.70. Can anyone confirm this for me? Thanks for your help. Glen

The G81 indicates a Posi. rear. Are there any other line items on the sticker?

If not, I would venture a guess that the "N" is a 3.55.

Thanks Harry, I believe you are right about the 3.55. No other lines on sticker due to the deteriorization of it. Thanks again. Glen

          Glen -

No way to tell from that item on the tank sticker - the "NA" is the ECL (Exception Code Letter) code for the particular powertrain combination for your car, not the axle ratio code. The axle ratio and date codes are stamped into the flat machined surface on the bottom of the diff carrier, just forward of the rear spring bottom retainer plate; that will tell you what ratio was originally installed in that carrier, assuming the ring and pinion gears haven't been changed.

Per Nolan Adams restoration guide "02G81NA" is the production code for a 3.70 ratio positraction rear axle used in conjunction with a L36 (390hp) or a L71 (435hp) AND M21 transmission. You indicated you have a L79 engine. Your ECL should be CA (3.36) or EA (3.55) or FA (3.70) or GA (4.11) depending on the ratio. If you can read the tank sticker and your engine is a L79 then the NA is probably a typo. I have examples of actual tank stickers and they typically follow Nolan Adams reference to the letter.....
