BowTie Judging at the National

The Web site for the Sun Valley National says:

"All Flight/Duntov/McLellan Divisions are limited to ten (10) cars; PV Divisions to five (5) cars; Star/Bowtie Divisions to four (4) cars..."

Does this mean a TOTAL of 4 Bowtie cars? Or 4 per division, but what are the divisions?

Division is the class in regular NCRS judging e. g. 1958-60, 1961-62, 1968-69, 1970-72, etc. Before a car can be registered for Bowtie judging, it must be judged or displayed at a Regional Meet. The team leader for that particular division must sign a bowtie candidate form certifying that the car has merit for bowtie judging. A Corvette is not eligible for this until it is at least 20 years old. Refer to Section 8, pp. 19-23 of the Judging Reference Manual.

Adding to Reba's comments, 'Division' is a logical grouping of cars and at National Conventions, it's pretty firmly tied to the 'natural' dividing lines of the National Team Leader assignment and Judging Guide publications. But, if one wades through the NCRS Judging Reference Manual (white book containing the rules of the road -- standard deduction tables, Etc.), you'll see the definition of 'Division' is left to the Meet Judging Chairman which is always the NCRS National Judging Chairman at National Conventions.

Why is this definition left open to discretion? Well, at any meet (Chapter, Regional, National) you simply don't know how many people are going to show or how many cars want to register until the 11th hour. Giving the meet Judging Chair, the discretion to set/define Divisions allows he/she to balance the load between those who want to judge and those who want to be judged.

It's quite common at Chapter meets (and done at Regionals as well) to switch thing around. Example: '63-64, '65, '66 and '67 are 'natural' NCRS car divisions each with a National Team Leader and Judging Guide. But, I've seen meets where there were more, say, '66 cars wanting to be flight judged than rules allow (no judge will be asked to flight more than ten cars). In this case, provided sufficient manpower is available to judge the cars, a '66 small block and '66 big block division might be generated.

Also, years can be combined ('63-65) to keep from putting together an entire 11 man judging team just to handle one or two cars. Bottom line is this is done for flexibility, NOT to make things tough to understand on the owners. At NCRS, there are owners and judges, but we're ALL members....

Cars may be brought to any Regional/National meet, for any reason, declared a BowTie candidate and inspected. If deemed applicable, a good-for-next-National convention invitation to attempt BowTie judging is given to the owner....
