    65 Cooling System Capacity??

I am currently getting ready to drop my rebuilt 327/350 in my 65. I have purchased a new Dewitts replacement radiator and expansion tank. My question is: What is the total capacity of the cooling system? I have read previous posts of a what type of anti-freeze to run with a new system, but can't recall what the newer type of anti-freeze that seems to be prefered. If someone could please refresh my memory on the name of the anti-freeze, and mixture ratio with water, I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

    Dave-----

The cooling system capacity of your 65 with GM #3155316 radiator is 19 quarts.

The modern coolant to which you refer is called Dex-Cool. I believe that tradename belongs to Texaco, but other products with similar formualations are available. Prestone Extended-Life (7years) is one. You can also purchase Dex-Cool from GM under GM #12346290.

      Dave:

The 1965 Shop Manual, and your 1965 Owner's Manual are at odds as to the system cap. One says 18 qts, and the other says 19 qts. My engine, which does not have A/C, and with a correct DeWitt's, took 17 quarts.

        Re: 65 Cooling System Capacity??

My '63 owner's manual quotes the cooling system capacity (with heater) as 16.5 quarts, and I believe this capacity applies to all C2 SBs with heater, but BBs were greater. The expansion tank should be half-full when cold. (It will be higher than this when hot.)

I recommend Dexcool, which is commercially available as Havoline Exteneded Life Antifreeze, and Prestone also offers it. Look for "Dexcool" on the label, and it is tinted orange for identification.

I would recommend you install 9 quarts of Dexcool and use distilled water from the remaining quantity. Nine quarts should ensure that you have at least a 50 percent concentration of antifreeze. The specs are not always accurate because of the differnece between "dry fill" and "refill". Since you are installing new components you are essentially looking at a "dry fill", but the specs do not differentiate between dry fill and refill. They just say "capacity". If your former antifreeze was the green stuff make sure you flush the system of all the old antifreeze as there is some incompatiblitly between the organic inhibtor package in Dexcool and the old-fashioned inorganic salt package of the green stuff. If the engine and radiator are new, you probaby just need to flush the heater core.

          Thanks All!!

Thanks everyone.....The entire cooling system is brand new so I should be good to go. As usual, this forum is worth its weight in gold.
