I seem to remember seeing a past Thread regarding the process of putting a chemical (acid?),on the VIN/engine code pad and it would "bring the codes up" briefly. I searched archives last night for an hour and could not find it. Seems like it was a procedure that the police use. Can someone refresh me on what the name of the chemical is and can it be obtained by the public? My VIN # is fine, but most of the engine code is not visible.

Re: C1 VIN Pad
Joe:
This was covered in the last six months here on the technical discussion board and should be available from the archives. The thing I seem to remember is that you could only do this one time as it could or would cause the lettering to disappear.
I remember reading somewhere in the past about a different proceedure that used gaphite and a special light to view the letters and numbers. I do not remember where I read this or exactly what the proceedure was.
If indeed the chemical proceedure removes the remaining outlines of the data I would look for a different process. I would think that either a university or a state or federal crime lab might be able to provide you with a method to obtain the data without being distructive.- Top

Re: C1 VIN Pad
You also may be able to contact your local police department or sheriff's department. Your best bet is the state police or Auto Theft Task Force. Sometimes the officers are training recruits or need refresher lessons themselves and will do it for free. You will have to consider their method as some are destructive. Although assuming that you need it done in the first place, a destructive process probably won't matter.
The consequences are, though, that if you have a law enforcement agency do it, they will run the numbers and if it's stolen......- Top
