    66 M20 shifter

I have a 66 with an M20 4speed. Shifter looks to be original, but the throws are fairly short. It has the chrome knob, and 3/4" straight shaft, and reverse lockout. How can I tell if this is in fact the original?

c-3 shifter will fit your muncie but it is angled at its base towards the drivers side door whereas an orig 64-67 shifter handle leaves the shifter body nearly perpendicular to the blacktop.mike

Thanks, Mike it looks like it is the original shifter.

P>S> forgot to mention that in 66( and 67 also) the 4 speed shifters mounted on the frame crossmember, not on the muncie itself like the 64 and 65 muncie equipped vets. even if your set up attaches incorrectly to the tranny, all you need are the 66 and 67 style shifter attaching (to crossmember) brackets. bottom line is you need the perpendicular to concrete handle. mike

          Brian----

Both 64-67 and 68-76 shifters have about the smae shifter travel. However, either can be changed to a "short throw" configuration. The cars are always delivered with the shifter at the "standard" throw setting, but owners sometimes convert to the "short throw". That may be why yours seems like a short throw. Check the position of the shifter rods in the shifter levers. If they're in the "bottom" holes, then yours is set for "short throw".

I believe this change was done in mid year and if a early 66 may still be transmission mounted.
