Hum....
sounds like the olde Corvette shark radio 'trick'.... Show you a 'box' and tell you it's a radio!
Either way you slice it, in Shark era it TWO 'boxes' to make a complete radio. For the base AM/FM (U69) one box goes into the center console (what most people call the radio) and the second box installs up under the dash (called a 'convector' unit). The second box performs the final signal output amplification and speaker drive function. Without it, you've only got half a radio!
When you jumped up to AM/FM/Stereo (U79) system there were still two 'boxes' but, things got more complicated because there were two versions of the second box based on whether or not the passenger side dash was crammed full due to A/C option.... The first box is the core receiver and it installs in the center console instrument cluster just like the base radio.
The second box, called an adaptor, does two functions: (1) final signal amplification and speaker drive, and (2) stereo de-mux signal separation. So, again without this unit, you've only got half a radio. For U79, the correct part numbers are: 7303211 for the core receiver (box 1) and either 7311911 for the base car adaptor (box 2) or 7312411 for A/C equipped cars. All 'boxes' had captive cables for interconnect.
If the fella with the 'radio' for sale can't quote you GM PN's and/or only has one 'box', I'd suggest you keep on looking!- Top

Re: Hum....
Thanks Jack! I have switched radio's a couple times, It now has a white lettered 73, I even went so far as Switching the face plate and numbers to green, that was a lot of fun, I'm just in that forever pursuit to find the correct year, even though the car didn't have that option! Thanks again larry!- Top
