Let's pretend for a moment that I own a 1953 Corvette with a 6 volt battery that I want to keep charged. In my hand I have a 12 volt Battery Pal. Can the two items find happiness with each other. Jack H.: Please limit your response to 500 words. Thanks, Dennis (And no, I don't own a '53)

Re: C1 6V Batt Pall Question
Well, you guys have certainly stayed focused on my question. How rude! Even Jack H. won't bail me out of this vicious attack - maybe it was a mistake to try to limit his response to 500 words. Jack, consider that limit removed... I'll bump it to 600. Dennis- Top

Re: C1 6V Batt Pall Question
OK Dennis, I got off of my lazy butt and went and asked the electrical engineers that I work with. After the normal statements like "What kind of an idiot are you?", "Software people shouldn't be allowed to touch hardware", and my personal favorite "Only if you want to blow yourself up!", I got a reasonable answer.
The short answer is no. The long answer is that it could be done by
1) using two 6 volt batteries in series
2) using a hugh resistor, the resistance of which would have to be determined by measurement
They suggest getting a battery charger than can be switched between 6 and 12 volts. Doing this with just a 12 volt battery charger is not worth the risk to the battery or the person.- Top

Re: C1 6V Batt Pall Question
Thanks Ed, Think I'll hunt around for a small 6 volt charger (may have to try a different planet). Fact is, I have tried to blow myself up a couple times, but to date, have failed. And Mike, I'm not looking for any offers to help. Best, Dennis- Top

Re: C1 6V Batt Pall Question
Dennis,
My local FLAPS has a number of chargers that can be set to 6 or 12 volts. They're not a modern technology maintainer type unit, but at least have a trickle charger function in addition to a 20 amp setting.
I'm sure you won't have a problem finding one.

Re: C1 6V Batt Pall Question
This is the correct view. Items like 'Battery Pal' (there are other competitive designs) are 'intelligent' battery chargers intended to do a 'keep alive' function. They work by putting out test charges in 'bursts' and, in between charge bursts, 'looking' at the battery's state of charge. They iterate until they've 'learned' the correct charge state for this battery then go into a 'maintenance' mode and clamp it there. The whole process is dependent upon the battery being a 12V or 6V unit compatible with the core design of the smart charger.- Top

Re: Mike - Never heard of FLAPS...
you should know what flaps are. rumor has it you attempted to install a pair of flaps on you 57 fi during the grudge racing era. Flaps off a condor to gain the cheaters advantage. then you discovered the Juice Bottle and dicarded the birds flaps/wings in favor of a better approach at cheating.cheaters choke. maryland missile.got to go bed early tonite before the poop hits the fan.- Top
