    Carpet installation

I am about to install carpet in my '69 and would like some opinions as to the best adhesive to use. I would prefer something that has a high tac but not so aggressive that once it's down it can't be adjusted like a contact cement. It would be a plus if it is something available locally like a 3M product. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your help.

Jeff, 3M makes a Super Trim Adhesive in a spray can, number 08090. You do have time for adjustments. They also make one not as super, I can't recall the number. They should be available at you local auto parts store.

      Jeff...

The Adhesive from Al Knoch is applied with a bush and allows time to do small sections at a time, thus keeping the carpet smooth as you go.

        PS...

Whatever adhesive you decide to use remember to get the backside of the carpet REALLY clean before you start the installation. A lot of vendors pack/ship carpeting with the backing loaded with mold release (greasey to the touch/feel) knowing the installer will thoroughly clean before final installation....

          Re: PS...

Thank you all for your quick responses. Jack, thanks for the tip on cleaning. I don't feel any greasy substance on the back of the carpet I got (from Romeo Engineering) but what would you recommend that I use to clean it? I like the idea of using the 3M product because I can just go into the auto supply store and buy without waiting for shipping from out of town.
          Again thanks all.

3M Adhesive in a Spray Can

I don't believe the 3M adhesive in a spray can allows for adjustments. Once it sticks, it sticks. But check the back of the can. It should tell you. Don't know for sure, but I'll bet 3M has a very informative Web site.

I do know the old 3M adhesive in a spray can will lift lacquer paint. If you use it, be sure to mask carefully.

Chris is right - If you use the 3M 8090 according to instruction, the carpet is going to want to stay where you put it. I like the stuff, really holds well. Used in a coupe, the vapors will send you to another planet...

Thank you all again for your advise. Dennis suggested that the Al Knock adhesive applied by brush is a good product. Is that available locally or is it only available through Al Knock? Is there an equivalent, readily available, brush-on that holds as well as the 3M product? I'd really rather walk into a store and read the label before I buy. In any event I really appreciate the responses.

                      Jeff ...

Romeo Engineering also sales their Adhesive by the quart. No label, however I have used it and it works very well, bushing both the floor and the back side of the carpet in small sections as go to keep it smooth. Bushing will allow you to do a good job of connecting the floor carpets with the tunnel pieces without making a mess.

You might try any upholstery place for I have seen both the 3M and quarts on the same shelf.

                        Dennis:
Thanks for the input. I think that you and others are right that brush on is the way to go. I am going to Bloomington and will try to purchase some from Al Knock there. I may also try your suggestion of trying and upholstery shop.
                        Thanks again.
