L79 Valve Lash Setting

Yesterday Rick Church had a post which was responded to by Ed Jennings referencing SB valve lash setting. Ed stated that from zero lash continue 1/4 to 1/2 turn. The service manual I referenced when adjusting mine said to go one full turn from zero lash. Is this correct or might I be doing damage to something and should I be doing it over to 1/2 turn ? Thanks in advance for any responses.

Service manual is correct in stating "one full turn" from zero lash. Using these specifications, no valve train damage should occur. However, the procedure given by Ed is an old "Hot Rodder's" technique that produces much better results. Ed's method helps alleviate any tendency of the hydraulic lifter to pump up excessively and cause valve float.

You can usually gain several hundred RPMs at the top end. Try Ed's recommendation. I think you'll be happy with the results.

Thanks for the reply which brings up another question. Will using Ed's method produce a "seat of the pants" performance increase at higher rpm's ?
