    1996 LT4 Questions CE

What is the normal operating water and oil temperatures for this motor? And what would a set of front and rear A-arm bushings (upper and lower) set me back installed? Lastly, what to look out for on this model when buying this model?

    Jim,

If it's like an LT1, the temp is about 210 +/- a few degrees for the water.

You can't buy just bushings. Currently you buy an entire upper or lower A-arm, unless recently someone has just come out with these. At least GM has never serviced the bushings alone.

      Patrick,

Thanks - I've been told that the engine will usually run up to about 220 until the auxiliary fan kicks on but doesn't go beyond that. The car only has about 80k miles on it and runs like a scalded cat and has been extremely well taken care of. However, that just seemed kind of hot but I really don't know anything about these.

LT4's do run like scalded cats. Just put over 1K highway miles on mine last week, ran anywhere from 204-210 for engine coolant temp and oil was 210-215. Ambient temps were below 90 for the trip. Have had mine since new and the only thing I have done to it is drive it and change the oil and filter, still has original plugs at 30K. I did install a CAG's disable modification so I could shift 1st to 2nd without the computer having any control of this function. I plan on keeping it.

Took one home for the first time today with 80k miles. Ambient temp outside was about 100 degrees here in Texas. Stop and go at 5 pm for quite some time. Got up to 225 degrees while in traffic. Left it running for about 5 minutes while I got my dry cleaning and climbed to 230. Runs about 210 when cruising around town. Does that sound too high?

            Sounds about right.

If in doubt, don't be afraid to replace the coolant. It likely hasn't been done since the car was new, anyway. It won't hurt anything.
