I have a 1969 big block coupe that I did a body off restoration about 13 years ago. The original motor was not in the car when I found it. So for 13 years I have been looking for a block with the correct casting date for my car. I found a nice block just a few miles from my house but the date code was Jan 31 1969. My car built on July 21 1969 needs a casting dated block from late June or very early July 1969. Anyone have any ideas on where to find the puppy. I live in east Tennessee and prefer to pick up the block or even possibly make a trade with my block. Tracy Performance has one but wants $2000 for it and I think that is just too much

Re: Looking for a 1969 427 Block
Larry - I went through the same for my 66 942 block....my experience was you are in the $2-3K range for a vintage BB, maybe your 69 is a bit cheaper, I don't know. If the block Tracy has is a good one std bore, I would go for it....not that many bargains out there unless you can find someone that doesn't know what they have...Craig- Top

Re: Looking for a 1969 427 Block
I am in the same position you are, except I need a 68 3916321 block. I have been looking for some time, and haven't found one in my date or price range. I contacted Tracy and got the same price - $2000. I have contacted a couple people in the Driveline, both personal and business ads, and the going price is around $2000. Even the 'dreaded' eBay blocks are between $1500 and $2000.
Expect to pay the $2000. I haven't gone to Carlisle or any of the larger swap meets, so you may get a good buy at one of those. One of my primary concerns was getting one "sight unseen" from Tracy, Engines Unlimited, etc. I'm not an engineer and worry about getting taken on a bad block.
Any advice on buying sight unseen or dealing with Tracy, Engines Unlimited, etc., or any issues similar to this are welcome.
Also, Terry McManmon advised me of unscrupulous people out there who sell blocks which have been altered with epoxy and iron fillings. Caveat Emptor!- Top

Re: Looking for a 1969 427 Block
Kevin - Randy at Engines Limited is a pretty stand up guy and seems honest. I met him in person a couple weeks ago in Bloomington, and he is pretty straight with folks. I conversed with him a few times when looking for my 66 942 block, but he didn't have the right one. My impression is I would trust him, and he seems to have a policy that you should be satisfied or he will make it right.
But, he is very limited on BB's....Craig- Top

Re: Looking for a 1969 427 Block
If the price is right on the block near you, you should probably go for it. I would also suggest that you continue to look for a block that more closely matches your car. You could possibly trade the block near you (and a little cash) for the block you really need.
You might also look into trading this block to Tracy, etc. for the block you need.

Re: Looking for a 1969 427 Block
Lyle,
I bought that block 13 years ago. It was freshly bored to .030 with new TrW pistons and a fresh .010 .010 crank and new set of lifters amoung other parts. I got it for $500.00 and since sold some of the brackets and pulleys that I didn't need for over $300 on ebay. If I thought I could get $1500 out of it I would sell it and buy the one from Tracy. Tracy only offered me $500 in trade! heck the machine work is worth nearly that much- Top

Re: Looking for a 1969 427 Block
Larry Will the block you have meet the NCRS six month rule? With a replacement block how close it fits in the normal window may not be worth the extra money as it will never be the original block and if it meets the rule will get the same points for the cast date as long as it is in the six month window.
