What color is the shifter ball supposed to be on 71 4 speed? I have seen both black and chrome used? When I purchased the car a chrome one was on it, but the black one was inside the storage compartment.

Re: 71 shifter ball
Rick----
I believe that the 71 shifter knob was the same as the 69-70 knob. This is GM Part #3960609 an is black chrome. This was later replaced in SERVICE by GM #3857160, which is the 64-68 chrome knob. The 3857160 has also been discontinued and replaced by GM #371573. I believe(but I'm not sure) that this is a black, plastic knob with steel thread insert. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 71 shifter ball
All you've been told is correct. Now, there's one REAL good reason for the original black chrome shift ball to have been replaced with a bright chrome one -- heat!
When I got my '71 there was this strange cover over the shift ball made out of leather and stiched to cover. When I removed, I found a pretty tired looking black chrome shift ball beneath. Pitched the cover and drove on down the road.
My car's a convertible and I enjoy top down days like today. On one good bright shinny day I parked the car outside and left it for a few hours with the top down. When I returned and went to fire 'er up, yeeouch! That ball was HOT!
So, today I keep a std chrome ball on 'er for driving and carry a black chrome ball for show. Oddly enough my black chrome ball is EXACTLY where you found yours....- Top
