    C3 Exhaust System

I need a new exhaust system for my 1970 corvette and I ma thinking about going to 2-1/2" pipe. My center (automatic) exhaust bracket is made for a 2" pipe. I hear that it is very difficult (drop the tranny)to replace the bracket. Can I just bend out the 2" bracket so that the 2-1/2" pipe fits in it or should I just bite the bullet and buy the 2" pipes? Thanks for the help.

One more thing, if I do not have the car judged what do you think about the chambered systems rather than the pipes and mufflers. I would like something that sounds pretty good. Your thoughts.

First of all, I don't know why it would be necessary to remove the trnasmission to replace the "ox-bow" bracket. I can't say that I've ever done it on a THM-400-equipped Corvette, but it would seem very do-able with the transmission installed in the car. After unbolting things, you might have to raise the transmission just a little with a floor jack, but that's all that I can think of. There are only 2 bolts which retain the bracket to the rear of the transmission. However, as I say, I've never done this, so I can't say, for sure.

Notwithstanding the above, I would not recommend trying to modify the existing bracket for a 2-1/2" exhaust system. That would be real "hokey" and would likely generate other fitment problems.

Quite frankly, unless your engine has been significantly upgraded in power, I really don't think that changing from a 2" to a 2-1/2" will do much for you. Don't forget that all 66+ small blocks use 2" outlet exhaust manifolds. So, that restriction will remain regardless of whether you go to 2-1/2" pipes, or not. For most small blocks, I think that 2" exhaust is quite sufficient. All 1969s originally used 2" exhaust, including all big blocks.

As far as chambered exhaust goes, I would not even consider it. If you drive the car very much, the sound will "get old" very rapidly. If you drive it sparingly and on no long road trips, it might be ok.

Any preferences on exhaust sytems out there? I want something where I can appreciate the sound of the car but not too loud. Any suggestions? Thanks

Use the "off road" mufflers available from Allen's exhaust.
