I noticed that the tail lights on my 1970 have a small wire connected below the bulb and when you remove the lens cover there is a small button inside the housing. I removed the wire and it looks like a fibre optic type cable. What is the purpose of this? It is just in the tail light housings not the back-up lights. Thanks for the help.

Re: C3 Tail Lights
That is a fiberoptic cable. It sends a light signal from the tail/brake lights to the lenses on the lower part of the shift console. There is one for the license light too, as well as for all 4 headlights and front parking/signal lights. The front lenses are mounted in the front end of the shift console just below the radio. This was all discontinued for the 1972 model year.

Re: C3 Tail Lights
The button inside the housing is the lense for the fiber optic system. The wire goes into the lense and sends a beam of light back to the console when the lamp is lit. All this of course is predicated on the fiber optic cable being unbroken. There are repair kits available from some vendors if needed.- Top
