Confirming that all the BLACK used in the engine compartment is SEMI GLOSS BLACK?

    Thank you in advance,

All Black IS NOT Semi-gloss Black

Mike, the color of the alternator bracket will depend specifically on which one you are talking about and which year Corvette...they can be black or orange. Since you don't give the year of your car the question is impossible to answer.

Air cleaners are the most visible item in the engine compartment that are not semi-gloss black. There are also other small items, all of which I can't remember, like the coil. The gloss on these two items is slightly more glossy than semi-gloss. If you consider that upper control arms are also in the engine compartment, they are not semi gloss either, but are more glossy.

So, there is no easy answer on underhood finishes. Get the TIM&JG; it will be a big help in this department.

Re: All Black IS NOT Semi-gloss Black

On a '57, the long generator adjusting brace from the water pump was installed at St. Louis, and was dip-primed black (semi-gloss, like the fan shroud).

                    John,
Now if only the CTIM & JG could be brought up to date on this one! Regards,

                      And...On 70-71 Small Blocks...

The lower alternator bracket was painted with the engine...Chevy Orange. But, in 72, the lower bracket was cast and painted semi-gloss black. In both cases, the upper adjusting brace was dip-painted semi-gloss black. Now, we gotz to have the year if you want a specific question answered accurately. :-)

                        Jim,
Are you telling me that the "hockey stick" generator brace that leads from the water pump to the top of the generator on my '56 should be semi-gloss black instead of the chevy red?

                          Re: Hear-Hear, - Garry

                          Garry,
Yes I am. Possibly if your '56 is very, very early engine red may be OK. There is just too much doctumentation that now exists to indicate this brace was black. John H's, Mark Swanson's and Ken Kayser's support this doctumentation as do I. (Hint, early Chevrolet publicity photo's of V-8 engines on engine stands indicate brace as red. After many attached braces were bent over when shipped on pallets from Flint to St. Louis Chevy got wise and sent them down in bulk to the assembly plant. In bulk they hab been dipped black) If your being judged by the book you'll have your hands full! Regards.

                              Jim,
Interesting.....My car has been judged three times by two different chapters (by three visiting C1master judges from the midwest) and this was never mentioned. Scores 1st-94.7 2nd-96.7 3rd-98.2 Are you saying that if I were to paint it black, I would most likely get a deduction because it is not in the book?
