My four speed came with 2 knobs. One is a complete sphere and the other has a cutout, in the thread area, apparently for a nut. Which is correct for the 63 four speed? If the cutout is for a nut and washer, what is used?

Re: C2 1963 shift knob
Jerry----
The PROUCTION shifter knob used for your car was GM #3788202. This knob was made of black bakelite plastic. As far as I know, it was completely round with a tapped hole for attachment to the shifter lever.
The GM #3788202 was discontinued in February, 1967 and replaced by GM #3895202. That piece was discontinued in December, 1967 and replaced by GM #3921146. I don't know how these parts differed from the original, but it may have been in the way you describe for one of your knobs and that may be what you have. Otherwise, it may be an aftermarket piece. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C2 1963 shift knob
Jerry-----
I am not aware of any original 1963 shifter knob which had the shift pattern on it. In fact, later Corvettes didn't have it, either. The shift pattern was displayed on the console, NOT the knob. Chevrolet never put the pattern in 2 places.
The later SERVICE knobs that I mentioned MAY have had the patterns on the knob; they could have been a "one-size-fits-all" type of thing to SERVICE many applications.
By the way, you didn't mention anything about a shift pattern being present on either of the knobs in your original post.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: C2 1963 shift knob
As a SWC original owner, I can assure you that the OE shift knob is as Joe described - spherical black bakelite with no pattern and a threaded insert to screw onto the shift lever.
The shift pattern is on a separate annodized aluminum plate that attaches to the center console annodized aluminum trim plate.

Re: C2 1963 shift knob resolution
Joe------
If the 1963 knob was carried over to early 1964, then I would expect that the 1963 shifter linkage must have been used as well on those cars. I don't think that the thread size is the same for the 1963 and 1964 shifter lever (and knob). In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
