    M-20 fluid change

The 30 year old jelly in my '69 M-20 transmission is making it tough to shift until its warmed up. I wanted to change the fluid to Redline MTL so I ordered up a couple of quarts, jacked and supported the car and crawled under. Hummmm, no drain plug. I was wishfully thinking the bottom bolt on the tail mount was threaded into the case but it is blocked (clue was no sealing washer). So, Aside from pulling a perfectly good transmission from my car, what is the trick to getting the old fluid out?

    Mornin' Tom,

Most garages will have a hand held suction gun they can use to remove the existing lube. The hotter the trans the more fluid removed. At best, they will only get 80-90% of it. Some auto stores will sell you a ssimilar device that you can use. You will probably need to add an extension to it to reach bottom of the case. If you elect to do this at home I would recommend doing it twice, that way you will remove more of the old lube.

If you really want to do the job right, bite the bullet and pull the tranny. You can always tell your self the synchro's need to be inspected. Have fun and be careful! Bill

I have a 1970 LS5 w/ a M20 tranny, it has a drain plug, its on the same side as the filler. But maybe Muncie had different cases.

Tom, I've used the suction gun method (they're inexpensive at Wal-Mart and such) with a clear piece of PVC tubing attached to it with decent results. If your car isn't in running condition (so you can get the oil up to temp.), position a heat lamp under the car and diret it the bottom of the tranny for about 4 hours.

You will still need to suction/refill again after you run the car on the road to remove some of the settled contaminants that will be suspended as a result of driving the car.

            Good luck, Ed NCRS # 13671 '69 L-68
