It's very much a do-it-yourself project if you're at all capable. No special tools needed. 3M Super Weatherstrip Cement and remover/cleaner are the main items that you need in addition to the weatherstrip, of course.
The only really tricky piece is the rear bow weatherstrip on the convertible top. It takes a lot of patience. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 weatherstripping
try to buy original weatherstrip if possible, there is a big difference in the aftermarket, don't get me wrong , the aftermarket makes a fine replacement when original is not available , the original is an excellent weatherstrip and well worth the aditional , just my thoughts- Top

Virtually all of the GM weatherstipping for 68-72 convertibles is discontinued and has been for quite awhile. The only pieces on the cars that may remain available are the deck lid weatherstrip and the hood ledge weatherstrip. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 69 weatherstripping
mr Joe Lucia , i always look forward to your knowledge and text on the site , and look forward to your text, i am currently installing weatherstrip and was lucky enough to find GM rubber and paid handsomely for the original stuff . a few of the problems encountered
problem #1 -the quality of the doors and trunk/top storage area are excellent compared to the reproduction but the original body of the rubber creates a closing problem at first untill the weatherstrip finds a set , so be patient with the originals . the reproductions are not as full and the neoprene is more pliable, leading to an easier closing and gapping of the applied areas. Also be aware the weatherstrip -GM for the convertible, the trunk/storage area rubber is aprox, 4" too long and will have to be cut, the number is correct, but must be to apply to other applications/years
#2 be sure to remove all residue from original weathgerstrip/ wax or mould release or the glue will stick well to body not the weatherstrip.the originals seem to have a smooth outer skin compared to reproes.i scuffed them lightly with some 400 to aid in adhesion, very light.
if you have to remove some glue , lacqure thinner works well as long as the finish on the car is urathane,. I suspect that there may be toluene or other thinners and reducers that may acomplish the same effect than buying the 3M . Just dont use the thinning agent that the topcoat of the car used or trouble will ensue. All i was referring to is that the originals seem a far better w/s than reproes , they do require some patients as far as the fiding and fit though. just my thoughts and thanks to Joe and others who have answered my call for assistance in the past and look forward to your advice in the future of the rebuild on my 69 BB convert.- Top
