1963 "Elephant Ear"

Folks,

Would anyone happen to know the size of the font for the GM Part Number that was stencilled on the "elephant ears"? I know they were a standard "GM yellow" but don't know the size! Thanks for any help. Rick

For 1963 Z06's, the "elephant ears" provided "directed cooling" for the front brakes. The shape of the "cooling ducts" actually look kind of like elephat ears, hence the name!

Rick - No answer here, but for the C1's, I thought the P/N's were stenciled only on the burlap bag they came in... not on the front or rear scoops. Looking to learn, Dennis

According to Franz Estereicher, the P/N's were on each of the front "ears". He sent me a picture of an original pair, and they appeared to be the "standard" GM yellow paint, but I couldn't really tell from the picture what the size of the font was. Several folks have indicated they thought they were around 1/2 inch?

FYI - gentleman in MA is reproducing the "burlap bags" and he indicated the P/N would be stencilled on the burlap bag. Guess I can wait for the burlap bag to come in and measure the size of them.

BTW - reason I was asking about the size of the font, I DO NOT plan on installing the elephant ears. I plan on having them in the burlap bag and in the storage compartment when I have the car judged at the Carolina Regional. That is hopefully judged, if Tony's Corvette has the car ready! And, things are looking better and better! (VBG)

the yellow inked part # is still one both of my ears as they were never installed on my 63 ZO6 vin 21301. the part # on these 63 ears is considerably smaller that the part # on the burlap bag of my 61's front and rear scoop. i can measure the yellow part # if you'll remind me in a couple days. mike

Hi Rick, On page 223 of noland adams book, there a picture of the air scoop with the part number showing, I don't think the number are 1/2 in size,Rick call me when you get your bags in, Thanks Danny #38266

The GM blueprint for the Z06 scoop specifies that the number and GM trade mark must appear on the part .25 high. I'll send you a measurement off one as soon as I get time.

ok , turkey, here's the response: 63's didn't have rear scoops(i suppose the little tanker you owned previously did but the real ones didn't.) seriously, i doubt( but have nothing objective to support this theory)that any of the rear scoops on the c-1's had a part # stamped metal surfaces. If they did, we'd all benefit from a discussion on said issue.mikie

In spite of your bogus claims to own a '61 HD B&S and a '63 ZO6, I was curious, when learning about the stenciled front scoops, that the rear scoops (at least on the C1's) did not deserve a stencil. I have not yet noticed a stamped P/N on a C1 rear brake air scoop. Just seems a little funny the General felt the need to ID the front, but not the rear scoops.

Recived the burlap bag from Ron's Automotive and as Dennis surmised the, P/N is stenciled on the outside of the burlap bag.
