I'd like to repaint my ps ram since I had it our for a rebuild. The paint is chipped all over & looks bad. If I remember correctly, the NCRS guide says the color should be a low gloss black. Where can I get some to match? I got a can of low sheen satin black made for lawn furniture at Wal-Mart...wondering if this would be OK?

What to expect?
The NCRS Judging Reference Manual gives you some insight; rules of the road for conducting a meet, responsibilities of owner, responsibilities of judges.... Remember, while we're on the Flight judging field some are judges others are owners but ALL of us are MEMBERS of the same club!
So, lay back, take things in stride, observe/learn and HAVE FUN. The last is the most important point. At NCRS, each time you bring your car out for judging, it's a new day with a fresh/clean slate. So, what you learn here/there is NOT a KILLER item -- you can fix/improve upon your car's restoration to reach your objective in your own chosen time frame.
Last, when judges come to 'debrief' you, expect a flood of information. It's not unusual for the novice to be overwhelmed and simply engage in 'head nodding' as judges rattle off what they saw/found. Do NOT go into a head nod mode!
This is your opportunity to learn and you paid for the judging service. When something isn't readily understandable, politely ask them if they can show you the correct widget. With other cars on the judging field, they can probably walk you over and point out one of the elusive critters. A picture in your mind (or on your camera) is worth MUCH more than cryptic notes....- Top

Re: '72 PS ram
Tony,
I have seen and would expect to see more of a semi-gloss black. Not as glossy as the power brake booster or air cleaner, but not as dull as your inner fenders. Closer to the glossy end of those items.
I'd just pick up a spray can of semi-gloss and have at it once you've cleaned it up and prepared it. Remember that the rod will not be painted.

I think you meant the comment for John's post.
But you're welcome anyway.
I think you're right on in the comments. Judging is often taken WAY too seriously, usually by both owner AND judge.
Take care, Jack.

Re: '72 PS ram
Patrick, my original PS cylinder (matching Julian date) was closer to the black GM primer, PN 1050104, than to the air cleaner or the booster. That would explain my suggestion that a satin or low-sheen "Lawn Chair Black" should work. But, if Tony wants to buy a can of Krylon 1613, it certainly couldn't hurt anything.
BTW, I believe the snap ring and packing on the cylinder end should also not be painted; dip painting the cylinders before assembly would be consistent with GM's usual practice, but I could be wrong.- Top

Re: '72 PS ram
Chuck,
I would suggest that the original sheen has dulled significantly over the years from exposure to chemicals from both the engine as well as the road way.
Just my $0.02
Maybe Joe L has a NOS one and could tell us.

Re: '72 PS ram
Perhaps.
But, my observation is that the aforementioned original brake boosters vary from near flat to near full gloss (mine was glossy). Air cleaners are pretty consistently more glossy.
Another explanation could be that the gloss of the GM black primer also varied somewhat; probably according to how recently fresh make-up was added, but then I am speculating.
I hope Joe will help us out with his contribution.- Top

You're welcome!
Don't worry about Chuck and I. We're well known for debating small variations in shade. One of these days if he moves to Michigan or I to Texas, we can show each other examples in person and get it all straightened out.
