The housing can warp by tightening the wire clamp to hard. I use two gaskets and it seems to work well.I also after replaceing a new filter idle the engine and then loosen the clamp to let the air out so that the bowl will fill up.

Why do you want the bowl filled up? Wouldn't that condition encourage leaking?

          You could always fix it...

I used Roy's trick for quite a while, but I got tired of messing with it. Seems like it would start leaking every other month. The problem is when you over-tighten the bail, it distorts the housing. The natural reaction to a leak is to tighten the bail, which just makes it worse. Finally I decided to fix it or kill it. Using a piece of window glass to check flatness, I used the open jaws of a vise and a soft mallet to tap the white metal housing back to shape. Re-installed the original filter element, and a hand-cut gasket (I have rolls of the stuff, much quicker than buying one). Not one drip in twelve years.

Re: C-1 Fuel Filter-OK more trivia

I was the one that wrote about a 53 to 54 Dist.Years ago, that the only way to tell a truck from a Corvette Dist. is to remove the side shielding then remove the dist cap to see the # on the points plate.Sorry guys! ( a guy right now on E-Bay is selling a truck dist. but I alerted him ) But also the fuel filters were dated inside to each years Corvette, ( domed AC or flat AC filters). So I now think NCRS should require owners to remove the glass bowl to check it out. Don't you agree???

              Also....

the NOS stock of original AC GF-124 filter elements (they come with fresh inside and outside gaskets) IS aging.... Those I bought from a recognized Corvette catalog house had original gaskets so aged/dried they simply failed to seal adequately!

For those who don't want to hand-cut their own gaskets, fresh ones come packed with the service replacement style GF-124 filters (pleated paper) AND you can visit your local NAPA store and order individual outer gaskets (they won't have in stock at the store, have to get 'em from the local warehouse) as Balkamp PN 730-9506.

                That's cute, Roy...

I'd have to say (as a judge for a non-Corvette class) that anything which cannot be seen through direct visual examination should not be judged. Or, to be more blunt, as I said to a fellow who asked me if I could locate an NOS filter element for a closed style air cleaner, "any judge who starts takin' my car apart is gonna get a broken wrist".

Nahh, but I swear this guy...

had his er, '68 Mustang at a show and some "judge" took the lid off his air cleaner to see if he had an OE filter element. Lets just say such "judges" should consider that the fire extingushers universally required at shows have more than one use...
