    C2/windshield trim

I know this was asked a few months ago but I had no luck on finding it on the archives.
I'd like to try polishing the stainless trim around the windshield,I saw a 66 last week and thought it was chromed! So there I go ,to the hardware store. I started with #2 all the way to 000 steel wool, nothing. I've tried 400,600 and 800 sand paper, nothing.I tried rubbing compound.I am nowhere. I don't have any "fingernail scratches" just numerous fine ones to dull the whole trim. Is my memory right on the previous posting "not to try this at home" on removing the trim yourself and the best way was to go to a glass shop and let the pros remove and install? What should I buy to get the trim backto a good shine? Thanks! Steve S

Eastwood sells buffing wheels and compounds to polish the stainless. If you want to try it youself. You could check out their web site.

Also try Caswell's at the link below. I bought my buffer at Harbor Freight 3/4 hp for $70 on sale and the supplies from Caswells. I have not buffed the trim yet but have buffed other things and it works very well.

It is one of situations if you want to do it right you need the right tools.

Be extremely careful when buffing thin items like moldings. The buffer likes to "grab" small items and throw them at anything close by. Could be lethal at worst, or a minimum damage the item.

Steve: As Dave mentioned in his response, go to the Caswell web site and there you will find all the information you need to restore the shine to your trim. You do not want to use steel wool or abasives like sandpaper etc. You have to polish them on a buffing wheel using various rouge compounds depending on the condition of the trim. I just finished buffing the stainless wheelcovers for my 63 SWC and they are like mirrors now. As Dave said you need the right tools for the job. Good luck Len

Hi Steve- Somthing else you might consider in polishing the trim while on the car. If you hit the windshield hard enough with a buffing wheel you could heat it up in a localized spot and it could crack upon cooling. I'd be very careful, and maybe wet polish it.

Also be careful not to overbuff! A mirror result is not as original.

Thanks all ! Both Eastwood and Caswell walk you through the process. I have never removed the trim so should I try this myself and with what tools? SteveS
