    AW axle in a 60??

I found a corvette with a AW stamped axle in Florida. What is this code if its not in any of my books. Not an upside down M either. Rear end is the original to the car (cast date cade perfectly to serial number). Tall gears (3.08 my guess). Non posi.

Any help appreciated. Its a high horse car (evidence galore). Had a roll bar and looked like it was raced (and in a mess). I thought maybe a non posi tall gear made its way onto a race track, and thus did not heat up as much as a posi. It has me puzzled. Bought the car on a hunch.

    Bob,

Check Colvin's 'Chevrolet By The Numbers'. The AW/3.08:1 is out of a '60 Passenger Chevvy 348 TurboGlide or 283 PowerGlide. That would account for the date being correct. '60 Corvettes didn't have any production 3.08:1. Don't know about anything the factory may have made 'race ready'.

Probably a passenger car center section - '58-'64 pass. car diffs were interchangeable with Corvette diffs. If the year code in the casting date is two digits, it's a Buffalo pass. car unit. Detroit Axle also made pass. car assemblies (single-digit year code) along with Corvette - if it has a single-digit year code and an "AW" stamped ratio code, it's a Detroit Axle pass. car unit. Thin (Detroit)-vs.-thick (Buffalo) "P" doesn't apply for ID, as it's not a Posi axle.

The car had a rear end cast date of D 28 0. (april 28). The stamp is AW 5 05 (may 5 th). The car is serial number 7299, so thats probably may 7-10 th production. I find it hard to beleive someone got a match that close back in the 60s if it not the original. I could not do that if I tried, but who knows, there were a lot of autos out there. I bought this from the second owner whom is in his 70s and passed on. The tach is a high redline never been out of the dash tach.

Either the tach is wrong and it is not a 270 hp car or the rear end is wrong.

          Time to resell on eBay.
