    58-62 Shifter

I have what is believed to be a 58-62 3-speed shifter. To make a long story short, it came out of a '54 Corvette retrofitted with a passenger car 3-speed, and a home-made bracket for the shifter mount (who ever did the job was a pretty good metal fabricator). In searching through Noland Adam's book, the shifter fits the description given in the section for '58 through '60 (the same type was used in '61 & '62, according to the book). My question is, is there any distinctive markings, or part numbers stamped or forged on any part of the shifter that will determine what this shifter is for? The shifter that I have has no numbers or stampings on it, there is no shift knob, nor is there the polyethylene sleeve that is on the chrome lever. If it would help, I can e-mail pictures of the shifter-in-question. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

      Re: 58-62 Shifter

This is what I've found (ref. Noland Adams' book). The '55 through '57 shifters were part #3723114 that used a straight shifter lever arm #3723115. There are a few pictures in the book showing a '55 Corvette using a shift lever arm that had a slight angle back and toward the driver (possibly an early prototype?). In '58, the part number for the shifter changed to #3756665. This incorporated a new shift lever arm that was bent back slightly. Around 4-5-58, the part number changed to #3759056. What the part change was to warrant a new number, I don't know. Around 5-5-58, a polyethylene sleeve was added to the base of the shifter to help protect the boot from ripping. This info is from an older version of Noland Adams' book (1980 copyright). I don't know if there is any new addendum that supersede this info. Hope this helps out.
