    Car Cover Question

I have 2 "Back East" cotton car covers, no lining, just 1 layer of gray cotton. One is on a car with fairly new paint, not lacquer, and the other is on a car with original paint. The cars are stored in a garage. When they are on for more than a day or two, the cars end up with little smudges all over them, incuding the glass. I thought maybe the cars were dusty or grimy when I covered them or the covers were dirty. So I washed the cars and the car covers. I made sure both were completely dry before covering. That was sunday. Today, the spots are back. I guess some new covers are in my future, but I'm curious if anyone else has seen this with the "Back East" cover or any other. I assume the fabric is treated with something that's coming off. The only other common thing is the car polish I use, which is Meguires Gold Class.

    Re: Car Cover Question

    Rich,
I just noticed the same thing today on my car. I also used Meguires Gold Class. The smudges are even on the windows. My cover is BRAND NEW. I just got it. Covercraft, Dustop. Today I detailed the car and put the cover back on. This weekend I will check it again for smudges and post here again. Let us know what happens with you.

Thanks for that info. Yes, mine smudges on the glass too. Very strange. There's a lot of tree pollen in the air here (Long Island, NY) I wonder if that could be what is happening?. One of my covers is only 5 months old. The other is about 2 years old, but I washed both of them. Let me know what you find. I think I'll try a different wax and see what happens.

I use Meguiar's Gold Class wax also, and have Cal Car Cover "Plushweave" flannel-lined cotton covers on both my cars (one is 35-year-old lacquer, one is 4-year-old BC/CC) and have never experienced what you describe.

Re: Car Cover Question - NCRS Antenna Gasket

Rich, I have always used the lightweight tan flannel covers from Beverly Hills or Reliable Motoring Accessories who regularly advertised in Hemming's for years. Whether either is still in business, I don't know. Since my new lacquer was done 5 years ago, I have used the inexpensive Eagle One Wet polish and their Spray & Shine with great results. For my new car, I only use Zaino's which is at the opposite end of the cost spectrum. I thought I'd pass along my NCRS antenna gasket idea. I've done this on all my covers. Best regards. Re: Car Cover Question - NCRS Antenna Gasket

Thanks for all the replies. I am trying to remember if I had this problem in the fall or winter. It may be just all the stuff in the air this time of year.

Thanks for the grommet idea. Somebody gave me a plastic snap together grommet for one car, but I couldn't find another so I used a plastic electrical box thru fitting that screws together. Your idea looks better in that there is nothing "hard" to hit the car.

I find this happens when the car is covered while still warm.

Interesting. That would make sense if moisture is condensing. My 66 has not been out today and it has been uncovered. I'll cover it now and see what happens. I usually cover them as soon as I get home because I have this #$%@& cat that likes to sleep on the cars.

                    Rich,

                    FWIW,
I rechecked my car after covering it for a few days. I believe it was a combo of the pollen and the car was slightly warm when I put the cover on it. This time when I removed the cover I found NO smudges.

                      Thanks Ralph.

That's probably what's going on. I appreciate your feed back and that of others. At least I know I'm not alone!

I'm glad others helped out. I liked the NCRS antenna base
