Hello to all. I'm just starting to install the Al Knoch soft top that santa brought me in 2002 (I've been busy). two issues (so far): First, the pads don't seem to "go right in". I adjusted the windows to the hard top, then the frame to the windows. the pass side went fairly well except that the back inner pad is about an inch long (too far over the rear bow) compared to the rear outter, which is even with the bow). the drivers side is the same but several large wrinkles in the middle between bows. It has me wondering about continuing without starting over. Second is that the video I have cuts off at the end just after the explaination of the difference in the 61-2 bottom bow. It talks about measuring from the pivot bolt to the edge (1-3/4") or so and I know it slips in and is held in by the chord; but is it the same install as the earlier one from there(except the staples)??? I wouls appreciate any help you can offer. I've done all of my own work in cluding seat rebuilding (and a few other convertible tops - corvair, impala - so I really don't think it is beyond my ability, but maybe it is... Thanks!!!

Re: C1 61 convertible top installation
I installed an Al Knoch top this winter on a 56. I found that one needs to istall the pads with the dimensions like GM used. Al said in his video that one should use the marks on the pads which in my case were different than GM's. Using his dimensions my top was too tight. Yes I know he says it can't be too tight. However I removed the top and reinstalled the pads using approx GM dimensions and it was tight but not too tight to be able to finish the installation. Also his pad marking was not consistant from side to side.
Yes I had a little sagging on the top portion of the pads between the windshield and the first bow. However things seemed to work out.
Now don't take my comments on being negative Al's tops. I think I could do a better and easier job now having installed one top. I think I came out with a better job doing it myself than using some local shop. I actually think my top looks better than the one on the video.
My advice is to take your time.

Ron just did my top about 2 weeks ago. Email me privately if you want to come see it. Do you still take the commuter rail to 128? I live out near there.- Top

Re: C1 61 convertible top installation
Thanks Allen and Chris! I got the pads in better now, I had to re-attach the middle bow, but the holes are covered by the bow, so not too bad. Thanks for the offer Chris, but I don't go to Boston for my current assignment, what I really need is to know the details about attaching the top material to the rear bow (61 & 2). Can you tell if there is any glue involved??? Or does anyone have the video that they wouldn't mind reviewing for me?? I may have to make a call to El Passo and talk directly to Al or Gilbert... thanks again!!!- Top
