    '66 rear spring paint

    Hi,

My '66 rear leaf spring shows some of the original grey color and it seems to have a semi gloss look to it. The JG says it should be semi gloss grey but the Quanta grey that is being used to restore it is very flat. Any opinions on what is correct? Quanta says the product they sell is an exact match.

    Thanks,

    Ian

    Ian-----

The Quanta product should match perfectly since it's exactly the same stuff as was originally used on these springs.

Ian, my 70 spring was flat gray.

I had Quanta's spring paint, but didn't use it. It wasn't that the finish was too flat; I didn't think the color matched what was on the spring. I ended up using flat zinc-enriched primer because I thought it was a closer match to the greenish-gray was on the spring. Not only was the color closer, but it was the perfect application because it provides superior corrosion protection for the exposed spring, and no top coat was required (nothing sticks to zinc-enriched primer without pre-treatment). I can't explain why the color was not a match...maybe the flat finish attracted grease and road film that "changed" the color.

The National Tech Seminar on rear springs (Franz Estereicher) has been replaced by an excellent seminar on Muncie/T-10 4-speed transmissions, by Morgan Chemello of MasterWorks Automotive; Franz had to cancel due to unforeseen business commitments in Venezuela scheduled at the same time as the National Convention.

There's a pilot line car for sale in Venezuela?

With the destination of Venezuela, I strongly suspect that the trip has something to do with something totally unrelated to a 1963 pilot line car OR, even, a Z-06. However, such a trip could have consequences which bode very well for the Corvette restoration hobby. I won't say more than that at this point, lest I start counting chickens before they hatch. I'll let Franz report as he thinks best.
