    Posi code

Can someone decipher a rear end code for me. The case has the large P and is dated coded K78 with 3743833. The code stamped on the opposite side is X1117.
    Thanks,
    Mike

Date code is Sept. 7, 1958 which would make it for the 59 model year. You say it has a large "P", define large. The P comes either thin or thick, not small or large. if it is think I believe this is a rear end made in buffalo for passenger cars, but since it has a single digit date code that would lean towards the thin P and be made in Detroit for passenger or corvette. This info comes from Colvin's book and is not necessarily the gospel.

        Thanks Terry,
The P is about 2" tall and appears to be thin. How is the build month derived from the letter K? guess I thought it went by the alphabet and K meant Nov. A couple more questions come to mind, does the 3743833 number mean it was mainly for a Corvette or was that number also used for the passenger car. Would the X1117 stamping have anything to do with the gear ratio? Sorry for all the questions and thanks again for the help.

First the letter I is not used, which makes it October, my mistake, brain dead.
The 883 was used on a lot of Corvette years starting in 57 and ending in mid 61.
Passengers went from 57 thru 61 I believe. As for the X117 I'm not sure what that is, where is it located, got a picture? As for as I know the gear ratio is on the axle housing not the third member. Hope this helps if not ask some more.

                Terry,
The X117 is stamped on the passenger side of the case. By counting the number of turns (wheel vs driveshaft) it appears to be a 4:11 ratio so I thought somehow the X117 related to the ratio.

Look carefully for a shallowly stamped letter prior to the x--probably an A.
AX would be Ecode (they had a two-letter code, not one) and the 117 would likely indicate that it was assembled on 1 17 (January 17)

Your right Mike, it does have an A stamped on it.
                        thanks
