    C1 Wiper Trans Install

My car is a '58 and the wiper transmissions, plate/drum and motor have been rebuilt. In an attempt to install the right transmission, following Joe Calcagno's instructions from an older Restorer article, I can hook the upper cable to the drum, but not the lower. I had a friend push down on the stem and I pulled the cables
as instructed and still came up short on one. Questions - how hard does one pull and can this be done with fingers only. Will pushing down always unlock the cables and allow them to be lengthened or is this a one time thing? . My guess is I didn't pull hard enough to lengthen the cables. I'd like to figure this out before I attempt to do the left hookup. As always, thanks!

When the clutch in the transmission is released, the cable should extend about 3/4". Let off on the shaft, and the cable should stay extended until the shaft is pushed again to adjust. With that said, the last ones I installed I had to loosen one of the transmissions to get enough slack to get the last wire over the center pulley and then tighten it back up with the cable in place.

I'am experiencing the same problem. I'am installing a rebuilt one on the left side ( new cables) etc. I have the one end hooked up and pushed down on the center post and pulled on the cable but it will not hook up. I guess I will also loosen the trans., beleive I had to do that one other time. john

I also have the problem with the left side and it origially came off the car
as is. Now it is too short. Let me know of a solution.

I guess what I've read about installing the transmissions is true. It's not an easy task. The article I read said to have someone push down on the shaft and this will allow the cables to expand by pulling on them. I think the key is to pull on both at the same time. Once they expand, have the person release pressure and they should lock in and allow connection to the drum. Sounds easy, but it didn't work for me on the right side and I'm not about to experiment with the left until I figure it out or someone explains the procedure so Bubba here can understand. To go on, the article said once the cables are connected, push again on the shaft and they should unlock and tighten. Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! David

Only the INNER cable pulls out. The outer one is fixed.

              David,
If the cables do not pull out on one or both sides, then the cable tensioning mechanisim is frozen. This spring wound tensioning system must work to keep the cables taut. There are several vendors who rebuild these transmissions at about $75 per transmission, but if the only thing that is wrong is the tension mech, then you can probably fix them youself. If you submerge the entire transmission in WD40 or similar penetrant for a couple of days, it will probably will free up. You are correct that you have someone push down on the end of the transmission while you pull some slack out of the cables. Then release the pressure on the transmission, and the cable should stay pulled out when you relaease them. After installation, you just press down on the transmission end, and the wound-up spring will automatically pull the cables taut.
Don't be concerned about trying the other side, as there is nothing you can do to hurt it. It will either work or it won't, and if it doesn't then you will have to repair this one as well. It is really not a difficult job if the tensioner is not frozen. The transmission has a pulley for each cable and they are clutched together. When you press on the end of the transmission, it is supposed to separate the two pulleys allowing either the spring to wind them in relation to each other, or unwind them if you are pulling on the cables. Avoid the temptation to try and pry the pulleys apart with a small screwdriver, since you will probably ruin the pulleys. Just soak them until they free up enough to allow the pressure on the stem to move the pulley.

              Regards, John McGraw

                John,

The transmissions were overhauled and I am just now trying to connect them.
I've got to be doing something wrong. Guess I'll have to try the left side and see if that works. The Board will probably be hearing from me again on this one.
Thank's to all who have responded for your input. Anyone else, please jump in. I'll continue to monitor this thread.

                  David...

Use pliers to get a better grip on the cable next to the crimp slug. Pull straight away from the transmission until the full length of the cable is extended, Once extended the cable will stay extended to hook up on the drum. I found extending one cable at a time worked great.
