    Re: BAD NEWS

    Geoffrey------

Yup, it happens. More-and-more. I think that it's all related to the DELPHI spin-off from GM several years ago. This changed the whole "dynamics" of the replacement parts world. Nowadays, when a contract is renegotiated by GMSPO for supply of replacement parts, DELPHI bids on a "real world" basis. In other words, low volume replacement parts= high price per unit. Or, they refuse to even make the part anymore. In that case, if GMSPO wants to continue the part, they have to look for another supplier. Then, the same thing happens: low volume replacement-only part=high price per unit. It's a simple equation. The general aviation parts market is a perfect example of this. Several years ago I ordered a whole "laundry list" of parts for a friend-of-a-friend who has an old Cessna 182 on his ranch in Brazil. Such parts are very hard to get in Brazil, so I ordered them here and they were shipped. These were all PLASTIC INTERIOR PARTS to restore the interior of the passenger compartment. The WHOLESALE (my price, at the time) cost for the list? Just about $50,000. All the parts fit in about 3 medium size boxes.

There are some of the pieces, as you point out, which end up outside of the "general price increase". A few come to mind: the transmission mount for 63-79 manual transmission cars is one. Now GM #22188495, this piece currently GM lists for $157.12. We'll see more of this sort of thing in the future. That is, if we're LUCKY. You KNOW what the more likely option is: DISCONTINUED!

              Geoffrey-----

I finally got the new-design GM windage tray for the "ZL-1" which I've been waiting almost 2 years for (no problem, though, it gave me a good excuse for procrastination on the project; I just couldn't build the engine without this windage tray, of course). Anyway, GM list for this WINDAGE TRAY/OIL BAFFLE is $265.91.

LOW PRODUCTION VOLUME= HIGH COST PER UNIT. Same old story!

                Re: BAD NEWS...it gets worse!!

                Geoffrey.....57.86 cost, 98.40 list Canadian!!!!! Lets do the math....$37.41 x US/CAn $ exchnage rate...$1.35 Can/$100 USD = $50.50/$83.95 + 7% general sales tax + 8% provincial sales tax = $97.02 Can.
I can remember when they were under $10...........

Ford did this years ago, one other reason is...

Ford charges a shelf fee to parts. One or more times a year, the price of a Ford part will go up even if the part has not been produced for years. When the part is run, the increase in cost is added to the price. This has resulted in some stunning increases. Ten years ago the price of '73 Mustang motor mounts went from maybe $60 to over $200. That's over $250 in today's money. Pretty scary, $500 for a pair of motor mounts for a 302 2V Mustang. They went obsolete pretty fast after that. Ford has been cancelling parts like crazy for the last 5 years or so. Almost nothing is available for early Mustangs from Ford now, although on the aftermarket you can practically buy everything but the VIN.

Dave, If You Buy A Ford...

You really need to buy three...One to drive while one is broken, and another one for spare parts...It'll be cheaper than buying the parts individually.
