    72 Differential filler plug

Good afternoon to all. I went out to check my differential and can't access the filler plug that well on my 72. The only time that I ever had this plug out was when the spare tire carrier was out and the car was jacked up. I can't get my usual crescent wrench on this. I never had this problem on my 66 either because, once again, the only time I ever filled it or checked it the car was jacked up with the spare tire carrier off.

I currently have the right wheel off and the car in the air. The plug is in full view but since it is a tapered steel plug a standard socket won't fit on it. At least none of my sockets seem to. Is there some secret here or do I have to pull the spare carrier to get room to put an adjustable wrench on it?

    Thanks, Gary 21316

    Never mind!

I found that by using a 12 point 3/4 inch socket I got it out. Some excess diff. oil ran out. The whole reason that I went into the differential was that yesterday I was going to take the 72 out for a spin and I got a whine out of the rear end of the car. When I bought this car in Sept. all of the oils and fluids were changed including adding GM brand posi additive. I was surprised at this sudden noise and I thought I would take a look. By the way, in this differential, is an excess 1 cup or so of diff. oil an undesirable thing. That is about what came out. I am hoping that a good spin around the block will remove the whine. Gary
