    C1 hood latches

While I am working on the hood cable release I thought I might take the latches off and paint them black as I am told they should be. They seem to be held in place by 4 bolts. the two in the front are easy - threaded nuts. the two on top are bolts - what do they screw into. Fixed threaded holes or nuts on the bottom - if nuts - then how do you get to them to hold the wrench to them to tighten them. The AIM doesn't seem to help in this regard. Before I take them off I want to make sure I can get them back on - I really don't want to disassemble the fire wall etc to get to all of this.
    thanks for the help.

    Re: C1 hood latches

    Joe,

The bolts on the top thread into a plate anchored under the fiberglass. As far as getting the hood release cables out of the bracket with the emergency brake handle, my '58 has a nut behind the bracket that hoods the cable mechanism in place. Just back off the nut and then pull the handle and cables out. The female hood catches were painted semi-flat black when the engine compartment was painted in production

David - thanks for the help.
It looks like the handle on my 60 is threaded into the plate that holds the emergency brake handle and the nut just seems to snug it all together. Looks like I will have to pull it all apart. I was going to try to lubricate the cables but that doesn't seem to work.
guess the only choice is to replace with a part from CC.
      thanks again,

        Joe,

It might be that the threaded portion of the assembly that goes through the hole is just corroded in place. CC lists the correct assembly with handle and nut. It fits 58-62. Check page 90 of their catalogue. If that assembly has not been out of the car for a long long time, it must be corroded and locked in.

          Re: C1 hood latches

Problem solved - It appears that the hole in the break support and the threaded handle for the hood release both have a flat side on the bottom - i.e. instead of being a circle the threaded portion of the handle assembley is a circle with a flat bottom. on my car the handle got turned slightly and in essence threaded itself into the bracket. Once I turned it a little and got the flats lined up it came right out. thanks.
Now to paint the latches. I understand that the rubber bumper was not on the female latch when it was painted but added later. Were the springs installed before painting? How about the retainer set that holds the cables from the release handle?
          Thanks,
          Joe

            Re: C1 hood latches

            Joe,

This is just speculation. There are others who have greater knowledge concerning
build sequence and what was painted when. My best guess is that the rubber bumpers were added after the engine compartment was paint. I also guess the female catches were installed fully assembled so the springs must have been painted. As far as the release cables are concerned, ?????? While we are at it, I know that the male hood attachments and hood hinges were installed before the underside of the hood was painted. Most of the paint peeled off with time because of the oily treatment sprayed on them to prevent rust before being attached. I suggest you re-post the specific questions you have asked in a new post. This one is so far down, you might not get the correct answers. I will be following the responses since I'm curious. Glad you got the release cable out and I was of assistance. By the way, my '58 is a very nice looking Panama Yellow driver and will never be NCRS judged as long as I own it. I've disassembled and reassembled the car twice since 1981.

              Joe,

Missed the retainer set for the cables question. If you order them from Corvette Central, they come painted flat black. I had to order new ones since the screw hole that holds the cable on the large bracket stripped. My guess they are supposed to be black. A lot of guesses from my part on your questions. Post a new inquiry again!

                Re: C1 hood latches

From previous responses I painted my '62 catch latches in position with the cables fully installed and adjusted. I painted with the bumper assembly off.
