    C2 Gas Guage

Recently the gas guage on my 1967 will not read above 1/2 full when the tank is filled. It will continue to read correctly once the level goes below 1/2 full, down to empty. Do I need to replace the sending unit and if I do, should a GM unit or foreign one be used.

Much has been mentioned about this and available in the archives. What I remember is to not use a foreign unit because the unit is not safe.

      Rick,

There is a recent thread (September 18) with a similar problem although it included a leak at the sender. I believe the problem was resolved by tightening the sender terminal nut and cleaning the terminals. There is also a test procedure for testing your sender within that thread.

        Rick.....
I had exactly the same problem on my 67....check the archives.....there is one thread started by my question on Sunday, November 11, 2001 at 8:36AM. It may not be your sender....mine was bad ground at Guage. If it is your sender be sure to test the new one before installing...some have been found to be bad right out of the box. Good luck.

I had a similar problem with a 64 years ago. The first thing I did was to reach down into the near empty gas tank and manually manipulate the sending unit arm through its range motion. You can then watch the gauge and see if it registered full with the arm pulled up. In my case the arm was just sticking, and working it up and down a few times freed it up. A very quick and easy fix. Note that if your arm is not thin enough to reach down into the tank, you may have to bribe someone to do it for you

Thanks to all, especially Rick Snow, as your link to the older archive was right on the mark!
