    PPG Duracrylic Lacquer...

Anyone know anything about how durable this lacquer is? Is it better than Dupont Lucite? I checked out the PPG website and it doesn't give the average person much to go except that it has a deep gloss.

    Thanks PT

I would think at this point in the history of lacquer, PPG and DuPont would be comprable products. I think that this is the same as the old Duracyl that Ditzler sold other than the loss of lead as a paints have done.

Also, at this point in the history of lacquer, it is about all you can find. So durability becomes a mute point if you really want lacquer.

I know it is all I could find in Central/North Central Florida.

the lacquer you get today is not as durable as the stuff you got in the old days. epa requirements have forced the makers to change. i painted my car with dupont lacquer about 10 weeks ago and it looks great but it is still very delicate and easily damaged. i wouldn't use it on a car unless it leads a sheltered life.

Thanks for the information guys, I think I'm gonna stick with PPG DAU, forget the lacquer.

            Patrick,
Everybody poo, poo's the new lacquer, but I do not think that it is any less durable than the old stuff. I have shot cars with lacquer since the early 70's, and about the only real difference I see is that I does tend to cure much slower. That being said, It will still rub out to as good a shine as allways if it is given several weeks to cure out. I try to wait at least 6 weeks after painting before rubbing, but when this is not possible, I will come back and do a second buffing after a couple of months to bring the high shine up. I still think that lacquer is the paint of choice for a judged car, but is probably a poor choice for a car that is driven a lot. It is easy to touch up an solid colors, but just like other paints, it is almost imppossible to spot paint to perfection with metallics.
I find the PPG DCC single stage urethane to be a great product to use as an alternative. It lays out nice, and when color sanded and buffed, it looks just like lacquer. It is a lot more work to color sand than lacquer, but it is also way more durable. Like most urethanes, it will lay out with the typical slightly lumpy surface, and color sanding will be a necessity if you really want to create the lacquer look. Of course, the jambs and other hidden areas will have to be flattened a little to fool the judges! This paint will still offer a color pull with compound or wax to satisfy a judge as long as it is not clear-coated.

            Regards, John McGraw
