    Mid-year side mirror

I would like to know how to disassemble for re-chrome the base from the mirror portion. It appears that the pivot ball is either a press fit into the base or it screws in. Personally, I think it screws in, either a right or left hand thread. Can someone elaborate on the procedure? Thanks in advance.

Here's a picture of a disassembled 67 mirror. The pivot ball of the base is held to the mirror housing by two rivets and a plate which puts pressure on the pivot ball.

To disassemble, you need to pull the ring around the mirror, and the mirror and backing plate come out with 3 little springs which fit into the pockets.
I'm not sure you can separate the base from the mirror without destroying the plate and rivets, or the pivot. I think the pivot is press fit into the base, although I've never tried to remove it.

There's a thread in the archives called Loose Mirror-Snap to Fix

    Hope this helps

Gerald, this may be dumb, but how do you remove the snap ring that holds the glass in place? My mirror surface is scratched and I'd like to have it replaced or resurfaced. I'm just not sure how to get it out (without doing further damage).

        Steven,

Push the mirror gently in against the springs, in the location where you see a small split in the snap ring. Then with a small flat bladed screwdriver pry the snap ring out. Do it on a horizontal surface, so that you don't lose the three little springs which bear between the housing and the mirror backing plate.

Also see my post Loose Mirror-Snap to fix in this years archives.

Mine was on a 67 which I think is the same as a 66. Later ones were glued on.

I might add that if it is not an original mirror it may also be glued on.

I just did this last week on my 66. I used a small needle nose pliers to grab the end of the retainer and pull out while depressing the glass. Piece of cake!!
