Went to restart the 66 Vette 327 cu.in. 350H.P after a nice long drive and found that it will not idle as it normally did. I have to keep the accelerator depressed in order to get it to run smoothly (also backfires a bit when starting it up) At a constant 2000 RPM -- it's OK, but letting off on the gas causes the engine to die. Pulled the plugs and they look fine-- took out the site plug of the Holley and fuel was just weeping out a bit, as it should. Took out the bronze filter and NO fuel came out -- is this normal for a Holley? The small gasket broke in half that seats on the bronze filter -- could that have been my problem? Thanks in Advance Bill

Re: Backfires and No idle
Sounds like a plugged idle circuit. If that's the case you could try cleaning it out. Turn each mixture screw in until it seats. Count the number of turns, and then remove. Next take some spray carb cleaner or compressed air and blow out the idle passage. reinstall each screw, and adjust. If the idle circuit was the problem it should now run smoothly. Could be an easy fix, but then again....
a nightmare. Here's the easy part: Inline fuel filter could be clogged, chang the filter. Blown power valve or valves if you have one or two metering blocks, check them and replace if blown, base gasket could be defective, replace it because when you take the carb off, it will rip anyway. While you have the carb appart, you might as well put blow all the idle and fuel circuitry w/compressed air. That's the good news, now the bad news. If you are still having problems after all the items mentioned above have been replaced, then the main carb body has a crack. It happens, my friend's 66 had the symptoms that you described, car would start, run fine when cold, but upon reaching normal operating temp, it would backfire, bellow black smoke out of the side pipes, and to keep the car running, he had to floor it.
We replaced everything, finally we swapped carbs. I had a junk 780 laying around, cleaned it up a little, threw in new gaskets, voila, no more problems. He bought a new one, car runs great.
His carb had an internal crack. Hope you have better luck.- Top
