    '59 C1 steering column...

How far down the column (from the steering wheel) does the dash color paint go?
Also, since the gauges, wire harness, pedals, and engine are out of the car, it looks as if I could take the column with steering box attached, out as a unit through the engine bay for paint and detail. This looks easier than seperating the column from the box. Is this the case or is it just wishful thinking? Thanks again. Pat G.

    Pat--
That's the only way to do it!!The ST-12 has a bit about that, but it's very straight forward on a 58-62--quite a bit tougher on a 53-55, and a little bit of a challenge on a 56-57.

Column colour goes down towards firewall about 1 1/2" below steering column bracket. There is a notch (elongated hole) on the lower side of the column that a wiring cap cover is mounted into. The colour ends exactly at the steering wheel side of that notch and the column is black from there towards fireewall. If you need a phot pleas advise. HTH

Was the black column masked off...

when the colour was sprayed or was there overspray onto the black? I know that
probably nobody is ever going to look there but since I have to paint it anyway....
Thanks for the info guys. Pat G.

Definitely masked off as the paint line is solid. There is no overspray anywhere on the black. Prepainted out of the car and appears to have been done seperate from the larger upper column assembly as, although the petina is similar, on close examination the paint "appears" to be a different batch but this may be an effect from the materials involved.
