    c-3 U-joint (hey what the @#$@?

Okay, here we go again. First big thanks for the help during removal. It's weekend two, and the install is going pretty well. The problem is that after installing one axle shaft the other is too far out to even start a bolt. The book (and we all know about the guys who wrote them) says to use the strut camber to push trailing arm out for more room to work. So I figured that during install cambering in will help put things together. Not on your life!!! With camber totally inboard, I am 3/8" short of being able to start threading. Is there something about the positioning of tailing arm that I have missed. Please post reply here, or E-mail cestmoi52@adelphia.net. Thanks for listening.

Have a helper push the trailing arm inwards till you can start the bolts.

Thanks Mike, that is just what I'm going to do when I can fine one. Most of my friend are working, or out of town. What's a day or so after weeks of this. Thanks again for your time and trouble.

I have used a "come a long" to pull it back together. You can pick a cheap one up for about 15 of Dr Mikes "frogskins"

i'd just loop a rope around the trailing arm and the differential, insert a short piece of dowl and twist it between the loops of the rope( or cut a 12" long piece off the wife's broomstick which will make for difficulty in her navigating the skies at nite. and it'll also save beast $)mike

Okay, now that the trailing arms are hooked up. Does anyone have an idea what to do (short of a body off job!!!) if the piece of board comes loose, and the carrier is now rotated. The carrier front is soooo high that the bracket hits the frame about 3/4" before thru bolt can be installed. Reading the manual on carrier removal makes me think the answer is in that part. Can you disconnect the three shaft u-joints, lower the strut bracket, and remove the carrier. This way I could put the thru bolt in and put carrier back. Any comments or laughter will be greatfully accepted.

              Thomas,

No laughter is deserved. Most of us learned the hard way by screwing up and trying again. Sounds like you simply got things out of sequence.

Am I reading this right, you still have the front of the differential carrier loose? You really need to get the differential fully installed on the frame cross member and with all front bracket and bushing bolts in place BEFORE you bolt up the half shafts. From where you're at, I would back up to where you were at the beginning of this thread, get the front differential bracket lined up and bolted, and then go back to finish the halfshaft.

Or, if I didn't understand your message right, you can laugh at me.

Thanks Chris, I have started the planning of just that. I hate going back, but live and learn as you say. Anyway thanks.....

                  Thomas,
When you get back to the place where you are ready to reconnect the half shafts, here's a tip that will make the whole process easier.

Raise the trailing arm assembly to ride height and block it there using a 9/16" socket placed between the bottom front of the trailing arm and the frame.

This will allow you to work on a half shaft that is approximately level. Makes turning it around to install and tighten u-joint bolts a snap.

                  Good luck with your project.

                  Regards,
                  Gene

Did you disconnect the leaf spring? Its easy to do and makes a world of difference
