    Sidewall Crack

Attached (hopefully) is photo of my Coker redlines with sidewall crack. Tires are of unknown age but at least 6 years old and have 1/4" tread left. This crack is only on one tire. It extends almost 1/4 way around tire.

    Opinions on cosmetic or dangerous?

    Randy

Randy, One of my Coker redlines did the same thing a couple of years ago, I still drive with it but I keep a good eye on it just the same.

        Picture or no?

Can others see the picture? All I get is the dreaded box with the x in it.

They crack may just be cosmetic but you need to get an expert to look at it.

It was likely caused by running with too little air pressure.

how much is your car worth?

If the tires are at least 6 years old and repros are already known for their poor reliability, I would pony up the cash and replace them just to be safe. If a tire lets go at any significant speed, you can kiss your fiberglass goodbye!

            Good luck,
            Mark

Thanks, Dick, tried that. My computer just doesn't like that picture, I guess.

                    Re: Sidewall Crack

If the crack was higher up the sidwall, closer to the shoulder I would be concerned about an insipient tread separation, however, it's located well below the belt edge and may not be a critical flaw that would demand replacement, but this is a tough call.

It's possible that underpressure caused the crack as mentioned previously, since low pressure will result in more sidewall flex, however, these tires are built to minimum standards, and I also question the quality of construction and materials, which could also be the source of the crack.

Another reason IMO to install only high speed rated tires on vintage Corvettes, which have inherently better materials and construction quality.

Sometimes you can also right click on the red X and go to "properties" copy and paste the URL to your browser and view it.
In this case you would copy/paste this address: ( or just click on it here)

                        Thanks Duke,
I talked to Coker and they said about 8 years is the life of their tires. There is a date code on the backside of the tire. They also said their tire is rated to 112 mph which I guess makes it S rated.

Now I have to decide if I want redlines again or a real tire!!

PS getting the rear spring cushions changed today per your oft mentioned suggestion.
