    58-62 engine casting numbers

A friend just found a bare block in his engine pile casting 3756519 which puts it in the 58-62 SBC range. Block has only one other #. We believe it is V189336 but hard to read. Anyone know what this is, means, deciphers to? Many thanks

    Richard----

The block is a 283 used from 1959 to 1961. It was used in passenger cars and Corvettes during that period. I don't know what the "V189336" refers to. If it's stamped on the engine pad, then it's not a typical coding used for any PRODUCTION block. Plus, the "V" could not refer to Flint engine as the "V" coding was not used until the mid-60s.

There will be a casting date on the rear bellhousing flange, on the passenger's side, in approximately the same area as the casting number is located on the drivers side, but small munbers.

        Joe...

Seems like someone tryed to sell me a a "V" pad stamped 283 engine once and my reseach defined it as a GM replacement motor used in trucks...Definitely not a vette motor.

That "V" may be part of the VIN of the car it came from. Where is the date code ? Is it on the bellhousing flange or is it on the side of the block near the frost plug ?

            Thanks Gents
I had the opportunity to chat with a custom truck builder today and he suggested either a truck replacement or marine engine. Am chasing both possibilities although the marine industry has diddley squat for records.
We can find no other cast in codes or any stamping at all ... just those two numbers.
Did manage to find the current owner of the heads that came off this engine though, so am awaiting the numbers off those. Now I'm lookin' I have to solve the case. Feel like Dick Tracy ... or does that age me?
            Thanks again to all

              Re: 58-62 engine casting numbers

This may help. Your engine may be newer and you will have a higher number but it sounds like what you have. Where are the date codes ?

              Engine Serial # 9 V 17014

9 = Automatic Transmission. If the engine serial number does not begin with a "0", the car was originally equipped with either a standard or an overdrive transmission.

V = V-8. If the "V" is not in the sequence, the car was originally equipped with a six cylinder.

              17014 = Engine production number.

Listed below are the first Engine production number for each year and type of engine:

              1955 6 cylinder = 52501

              1955 8 cylinder = V2001

              1956 6 cylinder = V30001

              1957 6 cylinder = 199001

              1957 8 cylinder = V50001

Look harder for the casting date on the flange at the rear of the engine. The numbers aer about 1/4 inch high. They were on all engine castings. blocks and heads.

Bill. All Chevy engines don't have the date code on the rear bellhousing flange. Blocks cast at McKinnon Industries have the date code on the side of the block near the frost plug and starter. If that block is one of these, the codes on the deck will not match up to your books. Email me and I can forward a pic of the date code. The posted numbers sounds like one of these blocks.
