    C2 Gas Tank

    Hi,

I'm just about to complete the rolling chassis stage of a restoration of a 64 Roadster. The original gas tank I have has a number of small dents in the bottom that are unattractive and one small soldered repair that looks to have been fairly well done. It has the rounded depressions on the centre of each side of the tank and the OL Anderson logo.

I also have another tank with the GM sticker on it, part number 3967746. This tank has the OL Anderson logo and longer more rectangular depressions at the centre of each side of the tank. This tank is in better shape than the original tank and is listed apparently in GM parts books as fitting 1963 - 1970 Corvette (specifically lists 63-67).

Question is - which tank should I use for a correct restoration? Is the 3967746 tank with the rectangular depressions considered incorrect for a 64? Both tanks are clean and look good on the inside. I suppose the dents in the original tank might be covered by the spare tire carrier, but the 3967746 tank just seems in overall better shape.

    Thanks in advance.

    Lawrence----

The GM #3967746 fuel tank is a tank originally used for 1970 Corvettes with LT-1 and without EEC. It became the SERVICE fuel tank for 1963-67 Corvettes when the original tank was discontinued. The GM #3967746 will SERVICE your application perfectly, but it's not "correct" in terms of configuration. Also, all PRODUCTION and earlier SERVICE versions of the 3967746 tank have the O.L. Anderson logo on them; current SERVICE versions of it do not, since that company went out of business quite a few years ago.

If you want a fuel tank which is configured like the original for judging considerations and you want a fuel tank which is safe and cosmetically perfect, then you don't want to use either of the tanks you have. In that case, I'd recommend that you purchase a reproduction fuel tank from Quanta Products. Their tank for your application will be virtually identical to the original 63-67 20 gallon fuel tank, including the "OLA" logo. However, you can also purchase other available reproduction fuel tanks which are also identical to the originals except for the logo. The logo cannot be seen when the tank is installed in the car.

Thanks Joe - just the information I was looking for. I'm new to the forum and am finding it a great way of getting detailed and correct information quickly.

I believe this is a view of the rectangular indent you mentioned. You can also find it (with some amount of clicking around) on the Michigan Chapter Web site.
