Re: Another ? on C3(72) pait on steering parts.
Rob, the answer to your questions is "Yes".
When the TIM&JG refers to low gloss black in one sentence ("The power steering piston and control valve are low gloss black finish."), and in the next sentence uses "semi-gloss black" to describe the same component ("The semi-gloss black control valve has a centering adjustment on the..."), it doesn't mean the authors were confused or undecided. It simply means that "low gloss black" is a generic description, and "semi-gloss black" is a specific description of gloss level. Either terminology is correct; NCRS restorers come to understand that "low gloss black" is that twixt semi-gloss and semi-flat black that GM used on virtually all black chassis components.
The actual gloss level was probably less glossy than semi-gloss, and more glossy than semi-flat, and you can't buy it in a spray can...not sure you can buy it in any kind of can anymore. Anyway, the upshot is that judges do not carry glossometers to insure a precise gloss level for chassis components since the gloss could vary slightly from car to car anyway...If you use any "low gloss" black, say semi-gloss black or satin black, I don't think you will see any deducts. I would stay away from semi-flat even if it could be considered a "low gloss black".- Top
