Re: Oil
The DElvac would probably be fine. There is a ton of previous postings on this subject on the board though. I tend to agree with it with regard to the logic of using Diesel motor oils. I think the major considerations are the fact that most of us drive our cars infrequently, prefer protection of moving parts over fuel ecconomy (the modern car requirements are a compromise with regard to protection and fuel ecconomym, my opinion), we tend to only start or drive them in warmer weather, they are kept inside garages especially in winter.
The detergent package is very important. But flow ability is key to start up wear protection. So, when using multigrade oils, it is good to have the lower first number. But in warm weather, I am not sure how low that first number really needs to be. The second number describes the characteristic of the oil after the engine is running at operating temperature. They say the greater the viscosity range the sooner the oil will degrade and loose its charcteristics. But, most of us change our oil chronicly for the fun of it. Probably never gets dirty. If the oil sits, I think it looses the more volitile components from it which are probably the wear package components. Oil should probably be changed at least once a year in an engine you care about.
This is sort of how I see it. Terry

Re: for Duke
I don't see a need to use a synthetic in a vintage Corvette because they typically don't see high mileage accumulation between annual oil changes, so you aren't getting any value for the additional cost. Most of the synthetic multvis CI-4s are rated 5W-40.
I just recommend the mineral based versions, and the commonly available multivis is 15W-40, which should be fine year round in Texas.
Don't know where you looked but my local autozone carries Chevrol Delo, Shell Rotella, and Mobile Delvac - all three of the major brands in 15W-40, which is mineral oil based version, and they are in gallon jugs. You can buy an on/off spout to aid in filling. My local Costco also carries Delo, but only sells six gallon jug cases not individual gallon jugs. I sometimes go in with a buddy and we split a case.
