C2 Turn signal flasher capacitor - Joe Lucia

[Floyd #21606]

I have a capacitor that I think is for the turn signal flasher on my 65 vette, but I am not sure. I thought I had placed it in a marked jip lock bag a few years ago when I started the restoration on my vette.
The numbers on the capacitor are;
Z3 172
.47 MFD
100 VDC
Below that is a small box with some writing inside it but I can't make out
what it says.
Any help is most appreciated.

I can't say, for sure, from the numbers. However, it sounds about right, to me. Also, the turn signal capacitior has the unique configuration of the 2 terminals being at "right angles" to each other. No other capacitor on the car has this configuration. So, if that's how yours is, then it's definitely the turn signal unit.

This capacitor is sandwiched between your flasher can and its connector. Go to the following website to confirm. You probably have it right.

When 63 changed from AM radio to AM FM the capacitor changed from the small can type mounted on the steering column to the type that is plugged into the fuse panel. It looks like the one in the photo. I think it's part number 3839756. Is this the same as the 63 capacitor?

I don't know. But Fred Oliva's website clearly advertises it as a 1964-1972 part. The part pictured has very thin, almost foil like connections, which must be folded over the brass lugs of the flasher can. When the can is inserted into its connector plug, these connections are captured between the male lugs of the can and the female receptacles of the connector plug.
If the 1963 capacitor plugs into the fuse panel, then it would probably have to have lugs, similar to those of a flasher can.

My 66 big block coupe (interior never restored) has exactly this part on the capacitor attahced to the flasher can. This is correct.

For Those Wondering About '63

My late '63 has the exact same capacitor without the blue paper. Hmmm, did the blue paper just fall off? I don't think so. In looking at the AIM, it shows a cap w/o the paper also.

My 66 has the capacitor as we have been discussing as well as "Green" paper between the capcitor and flasher can. I'm not sure on the 63 blue color. As you can imagine, the paper has become very fragile over the years.

67 capacitator

Floyd,
I checked my 67 coupe today and it is like you explained. It has a sort of goldish-foil around that scratches off easily when removing the clasp that holds it to the side radio panel!
