    Ammeter

Can anyone out there tell me what was used to dampen the movement of an ammeter? I recently smoked mine on a 67 roadster due to breakage of one of the hot wires from starter. It is an NOS piece that I installed about 4 years ago so am trying to salvage it by replacing the guts inside from a donor ammeter. Everything seems to function prorerly except the movement does not have the dampening like the original. After taking the smoked one apart it seems to have had a fluid inside and I assume this was used to dampen. Can anyone enlighten me on this subject.
Any and all comments will be greatly appreciated.
