    '78 restoration

Ken, If during your travels you run across someone who has a New/NOS Air Cleaner for a 1978 L-82, please let me know. I live in Tinley Park. Am about to embark on a total frame off on my Vette. Thanks, George

    '78 restoration

I'm looking for a reputable Corvette restorer in the New Lenox Il. area (southwest of Chicago) to do some restoration on my '78 vette. Most of the restoration is under the hood and will probably include a complete engine rebuild. It also needs a new windshield and maybe some automatic transmission work. Any suggestions on who I can take it to and about how much I can expect to pay? (ballpark)

    Thanks,

    Ken Holtz

      Re: '78 restoration

      Hi Ken:

As a former Mokena resident and Corvette restores I can tell you that when I left several years ago there was no one in your immediate area at that time. There is / was a very good restoration shop in Downers Grove, on Ogden just West of Cases Ave., whose name escapes me . I do however suggest that you e mail Terry Mcmanmon, ncrseditor@hotmail.com he lives it the area and if anyone would know it would be him.

        Re: The editor's recomendation policy

Ken & Jerry et al, (Sorry for the length)

I saw Ken's post late last night when I got on after a long drought. I generally avoid responding to these kinds of requests for 2 reasons:

        1) Even under the best of circumstances, there can be a misunderstanding between car owner and shop owner and the whole project goes downhill. Along those lines if I don't know the person asking for a recommendation there is the chance he might be a less than reasonable person, making demands that no shop could meet. I mean no offense to Ken here - I am just looking at the big picture. That situation has strained some friendships in the past and I am reluctant to have that happen again.

        2) Now that I am an employee of the club any recommendation I make carries the endorsement of the club even if I attach a disclaimer denying that. If I recommend one shop to the exclusion of another (assuming both shop owners are club members) I have now pitted one NCRS member against another - not a good thing to promote the growth of the club.

In the past, as team leader, I have handled such requests verbally or off board; but that position is a volunteer post and does not carry the same impression as that of an employee. I am sure you can understand the argument of the shop owner I do not recommend who would ask why a club to which he is paying dues employees someone who promotes his competitor.

I hope all of you can understand why I remain silent on this kind of issue. I am sorry Ken.

          Terry & Ken:

In my overzealous attempt to assist a former neighbor I failed to consider the circumstances involved in recommending Terry and his response was on target. I am truly sorry that I placed him in a compromising position and you both have my apology.

            Jerry,

No apology is needed. This post afforded me an opportunity to explain a position that a number of the officers of the club hold.

We all want to help each other, but sometimes the greater good is that of the whole club and the interests of all the members.

The shop in Downers is D&M Corvette. I often go over there to drool at the machinery. For example, they have a red '71 454/425, where the body os mounted on chrome-plated pipes about 4ft off the frame. Usually have several '67s about. I really can't vouch for the quality of their work, but their cars sure look nice.

You might also check out "Stretch" Zimmerman at Classic Motors in Naperville (on 5th Ave, if I recall correctly).
