    1961 turn signal problem

My cancellation mechanism appears to be malfunctioning, I pulled the steering wheel and inspected the mechanism for dirt or any broken parts. It does not appear to be broken, however it does not look symmetrical, the spring on the bottom is hitting in a different location than the top one. I can't seem to find a picture in the 2 manuals that I purchased, can someone send me a picture of what it should look like? Also the housing has some play in it, is this typical or can it be tightened and how?

      GEORGE...

To tighten the housing, there is a lock wedge that is pulled inward by tighting the phillips screw located on the outside of the housing.

For cancellation, check the location of the canceling pins on the hub.

The canceling cam is held in place by a slotted screw and is wedged under two guides, lubricate these two guides and the spring plate next to the screw that centers the cam. The centering spring should keep the cam symmetrical.

The screw should be snug, not tight

Lubricate the shank of the screw, also it is a good idea to loctite the threads of the screw.

      Good Luck...

        Re: 1961 turn signal problem

This thread is very timely. In investigating my own 1961 turn signal problem I found that one of the two guides has broken. The flat "head" has broken off completely and now the turn signal won't lock into place as the cam now just slips out. Is there any way to fix these guides? I see that they are part of the housing. Are the guides screwed in somehow, or are they riveted in? Are they serviceable?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks...

I seem to remember an article about this repair in the RESTORER perhaps 10 or more years ago; check the index.

Thanks to all for the quick responses, it appears to be working again, the main problem was the housing not being tight it was moving up and down the shaft as well as sideways. I tightened the screw on the back of the housing and attempted to center the cancelation mechanism as best as I could. How mcuh space should there be between the housing and steering wheel? Thanks again I really appreciate the help.
