    C2 Steering Column?

    Members,
I would like to disassemble the steering column of my '65 to paint the jacket.

How is the lower bearing assembly and seat removed from the jacket?

    All responses are appreciated.

    Regards,
    Gene

after the steering col shaft is removed from the mast jacket, insert a 1" dowel from the steering wheel end of the mast jasket( get a dowel a couple inches longer than the OL of the mast jacket) then tap the dowel against the bearing and race. it'll pop right out the bottom of the jacket. good luck, mike

      Mike,
Thank you for responding to my question. Currently, the shaft is still in the mast jacket. Perhaps the shaft is stuck (or rusted) to the inside portion of the bearing. Looks like more PB Plaster is required.

      Thanks again for the information.

      Regards,
      Gene

The white grease the General used on everything to make it slide turns to hard clay after a long time. I had to soak my 65 colum in mineral spirits and work it back an forth for a long time to finally get it apart. WD40 also soaks into the clay and after a while it softens up.

What ever you do - don't try to drive it out.

          Re: C2 Steering Column?

          Larry,
Thank you for your answer and suggestion. I was able to get the column out of the bearing assembly and finally got the bearing assy. out of the mast jacket using Mike's procedure of tapping out from the inside with a long dowel.

It seemed like there is a relatively loose fit between the steering shaft and the ID of the bearing. Not sure what that is all about.

I'm going to prime the mast jacket today. Paint black next week. I'm still not totally sure what gloss level of black is appropriate.

Thanks again for your answer to my post.

          Regards,
          Gene
